In celebration of 'Samgyeopsal Day' on March 3, the Super Super Market(SSM) industry is launching a meat discount event including Samgyeopsal(삼겹살: the Korean expression of pork belly).

Samgyeopsal is a piece of pork that is attached to the pork ribs and was named ‘삼겹살(3겹살)’ because it looks like three layers of fat and lean meat.

In 2003, the Paju branch of Livestock Cooperatives named March 3, the day when the number 3 overlaps, as 'Samgyeopsal Day' and designated the commemorating day to promote the sale of pork belly. As Samgyeopsal Day is widely known to consumers, it is considered to be the period when pork is consumed most along with holidays such as Chuseok and Lunar New Year.

As more and more consumers are buying meat, including pork belly, on 'Samgyeopsal Day', large retailers are inducing consumers by preparing discount events targeting them.

From the 3rd to the 9th, E-Mart will sell domestic pork belly and boston butt with an event card to 1,308 won per 100g, 40% off the original price, and 50% off to 1090 won per 100g if purchased with KB Kookmin Card.

Lotte Mart will sell pork belly up to 40% off until the 6th. If consumers pay with an event card for domestic pork belly and boston butt, they can get up to a 40% discount. If consumers pay with an event card for domestic pork belly and boston butt, they can get up to a 40% discount. Consumers can purchase pork belly and boston butt imported from Canada at a 30% discount, and domestic and Spanish Frozen pork belly at a 20% discount.

Homeplus will sell first-class pork belly and boston butt at a 50% discount for two days on the 3rd and 4th of March. In addition, a 'half price of Korean beef' event for consumers who have signed up for membership is held and all items of Nonghyup Korean beef are discounted by 50%.

대형마트 업계가 3월 3일 '삼겹살 데이'를 맞아 돼지고기 삼겹살을 비롯한 육류 할인 행사에 나선다.

삼겹살은 돼지 갈비 부분에 붙어 있는 돼지고기의 한 부위로 비계와 살코키가 3겹으로 겹쳐 보인다고 해 붙여진 이름이다.

파주 축협은 지난 2003년 삼겹살의 판매 증진을 위해 숫자 3이 겹치는 날인 3월 3일을 ‘삼겹살 데이'로 명명하고 '삼겹살 먹는 날'로 지정했다. 소비자들에게 '삼겹살 데이'가 널리 알려지면서 추석, 설 등 명절과 함께 돼지고기 소비가 가장 집중되는 시기로 손꼽히고 있다.

’삼겹살 데이‘에 삼겹살을 비롯한 육류를 찾는 소비자들이 늘자 대형 유통업계는 이들을 겨냥한 할인행사를 마련해 소비자들을 유도하고 있다.

이마트는 오는 3일부터 9일까지 '국내산 냉장 삼겹살/목심을 행사카드로 구매하면 기존 가격에서 40% 할인한 100g당 1308원에, KB국민카드로 구매하면 50% 할인해 100g당 1090원에 판매한다.

롯데마트는 오는 6일까지 돼지고기 삼겹살을 최대 40% 저렴하게 판매한다. ’국내산 삼겹살·목심'을 행사 카드 결제하면 최대 40% 할인해 준다. '캐나다산 돼지고기 삼겹살·목심'은 30% 할인, '국내산·스페인산 냉동 대패 삼겹살'은 20% 할인된 가격에 구매할 수 있다.

홈플러스는 3일과 4일 이틀간 1등급 이상 일품포크 삼겹살·목살을 50% 할인된 가격으로 판매한다. 또한 멤버십 회원을 위한 '한우 반값' 행사를 열고 농협안심한우 전 품목을 50% 할인 해준다.
